Pimecrolimus is a macrolactam derivative of ascomycin and belongs to the class of topical immunosuppressants. It works by inhibiting T-cell activation and reducing the release of inflammatory mediators from mast cells.
Although the exact mechanism of atopic dermatitis is not fully understood, studies show that:
Potential drug interactions have not been fully evaluated.
Due to minimal systemic absorption, significant interactions are unlikely but cannot be ruled out.
Use with caution in patients with extensive or erythrodermic disease when co-administered with CYP3A inhibitors (e.g., erythromycin, itraconazole, ketoconazole, fluconazole, calcium channel blockers, cimetidine).
Known hypersensitivity to pimecrolimus or any component of the cream.
Pregnancy Category C: No adequate, controlled studies in pregnant women. Use only if the benefits outweigh the risks.
Unknown if excreted in breast milk; risk to nursing infants cannot be excluded. A decision should be made to either discontinue the drug or breastfeeding, depending on clinical need.
Store below 30°C, away from light and moisture. Keep out of reach of children.
